copy/paste shape into SAME LAYER

this is probably the most retarded question on the forum but here goes...

I'm trying to make a compound shape by copy/pasting a shape into the same layer and using Add to Shape area...

the regular copy/paste commands aren't working and it needs to be in the same layer so Duplicate Layer won't do it...

Betcha they are and you just don't know it. When you paste, it's pasting it into the exact same location. Choose the move tool, and see if you can move the copy, revealing the copy underneath.

I tried dragging it and there's only shape...I know that's how PS normally copies it, right on top of the original, but there must be something different with these shapes...

ok, figured it out...it was copying it the normal way, right on top of the original except it doesn't separate from the original when you click and drag so I had to make sure to move the original before I pasted...I think it's because it's pasting into the same layer...
