how to make outline trace of a photograph

hello i would like to know how to convert a photograph into an outlined drawing
please help

I would use the pen tool in adobe illustrator to do this. Open the image in illustartor and carfully go around it using the pen tool on a new layer then when your done discard the original picture layer and your left with your outline.

The pen tool is the best for creating really smooth minimalist images. But it takes a long freakin time.

For something alittle quicker check out this:

This is what i have used for my work, with very good success. It takes a little bit of tweaking with the settings to get it to work for some images, and you will probably have to clean up some errant lines afterwards, but i like it a lot.
Example of completed work (used 2 different lineart layers with 1/2 opacity on the detailed one, and full opacity on the less detailed one, i also left part of the original image in there at a very low opacity to get a better feel for what i was going for:
