If you buy it before Jan 1, Yahoo is selling domains for $4.98 / 2 years.

By selling you mean leasing right? I don't think they actually fully sell over the rights to a domain registry anymore, only leasing or renting.

Anyway, yahoo is now a little under $10/year for the domain by itself, and a little under $12/month with $25 startup fee for the hosting of 2gb storage space and a lot of bandwidth, domain registry included in the package.

I do wish I could actually BUY the domains though, instead of leasing.

See it depends on what package you buy... there are hosting packages with which you get free domain name. Also, you can buy only domain yourself and use free hosting which is provided free by sites such as www.frihost.com and www.50webs.com etc.... Please ask again if it is not clear to u.

Anyone know where you can get the most expensive domain name? I'm just interested to see the comparison.

I don't know of their prices, but www.markmonitor.com is certainly one of the most expensive domain registrars out there.
Some other expensive ones out there are:-
http://publicdomainregistry.com - $35
http://domainpeople.com - $35
http://networksolutions.com - $35
