How to properly use the pen tool when extracting?

Hello,

Im trying to extract a circular object with the pen tool. By holding down shift with the pen tool, PhotoShop creates an arc - perfect, but when I create the next dot after that it curves the line in a weird way that messes everything up.

So, my questions is, how can I continue the line without having this odd curve after i have created an arc?

You can't. The pen tool is what it is, and we can only learn the best way to deal with it. Basically speaking, how you pulled the handle to create the last arc helps define where the next arc goes.

To that end though, there IS something you can do to understand the dynamics a bit better. At the menu bar at the top of the pen tool, there are several shapes. Just to the right of those shapes is an arrow in a blue box. Click on that arrow to open a dialog box that has a check box mrked "rubber band". Check that box. (See screenshot).



Now when you create an arc, Photoshop will show you how the naxt arc will look when you move the mouse around. It's hard to explain, but I think you'll find it's easier to deal with.

Here's a hint to making a circular path: As you're bending the arc to the shape you want, continue to trace the outline of the circle. If tracing the outline of the circle doesn't give you the arc you want, delete the last point you plotted and try again.

There's really no easy way to learn the pen tool other than trial and error. Once you get the hang of it though, you'll find that it's one of the most powerful tools in Photoshop.

I do something different i just click one or two times on the last point and then continue with the next pont.When i do that the next line is straight.I don't know if it helps but i thought i share it.Give it a try but you have to click exactly in the point

I'm so stupid.Just click on the last point one time and then click on it again and hold the drag just alittle on the side and then drag it back to the same position and then you can do straight lines again.You have to practice a little bit to handle it though but once you get it it's easy.
