Multiple gradients on one layer via layer mask

Postby rio38 on Thu Jul 12, 2007 3:23 pm

I have a layer over a black background adn I would like to fade all four edges into teh black background. I used a layer mask to accomplish the left adn right sides, but I also need to fade the top and bottom sides. There has to be an easier way of doing this, but for some reason, I can't come up with it. Basically, I would like to know if you can put multiple gradients or layer masks on a layer.

Thanks.

why not use a different type of gradient? Like a radial, or a diamond.

For another method you could create two layers, one with a left-right gradient, the other with a top-bottom gradient. CTRL+CLICK the thumbnail of the second layer's mask, invert the selection (CTRL+ALT+I) then click on the first layer's mask, and use a black shape tool to fill in your selection with black. You now have both of the masks combined to give you one area of color; the corner (if using a linear gradient) or the center (if using a reflected gradient). Then just delete your second layer.

This method (when used with the reflected gradient) gives the softness of the radial gradient, but more of an oblong shape if you are working on a non-square image.

Make sense?

Yeah.. or just foreground -> transparrent gradient.
Or shape tool with set to X ammount of feather and alt + backspace fill with foreground color.

Just an update. I moved the layer into its own file and then applied multple transparency gradients and it worked like a charm.

Thanks guys.
