Its coming 2006 but I am wondering what more they could add into the windows? I mean XP has everything an OS needs.

I bet it will only be more 'user friendly' and better looking. Thats it.

I haven't read anything about it, but I think they hae improved the security alot, since the WinXP SP2 had so many security holes.

The original idea behind longhorn was to completely rewrite the OS to be network centric, appose to its current standalone desktop model.

Now that they are coming close to the deadline they've decided to just spice up Windows XP by throwing in more GUI features, multimedia add-ons and fixing the crap SP2 brought to the Windows platform.

I'm not sure... If it would be launched in 2006 there would be more news about it I guess, so I think it will be 2008.

Anyway, Longhorn has been entirely rewritten. It's not just a Windows version based on the older Windows'es. XP was a 2k based Windows version... Longhorn has been built up from scratch, to make sure there will be less bugs in it than in the first releases of XP. They also intend on making it work even better. Not too weird though, because XP sometimes just freaks me out....

They wanted to make a rewrite but that's not the way it's turned out; it is being based off XP source.

Im not sure its a bad thing that its based on winxp. They have had plenty of time to change things and their programmers are very good. The computers nowadays are generally fast so they will be able to do more advanced programming than they did in winxp, so I think it will be fine even if its based on xp.

It won't be a really bad thing, that's true. But they had stated that they'd totally rewrite Longhorn, instead of making it XP based... So it's basically a remake of a remake of a remake.
