Outline a shape in a picture and change background colour

Postby bapelifestyle on Thu Jan 31, 2008 1:59 am

Hello,
I was wondering how to outline a shape in a picture and then make the rest of the picture white.

I've included 2 pictures:

This one is an example of what I want to do:

This one is the picture that I want to edit (Outline the shoes in the picture and then make the rest of the picture white):

It seems like this can't be too hard but I'm really bad at Photoshop.
Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks a lot

a mask will make anything you paint (on the mask layer) transparent, with out doing harm to the actual layer.....so if you mask out an object, but decide later you need it, you can erase the mask.....

it's a simple once you get the hang of it....anything you paint black becomes transparent, anything you paint white will be shown.....

I was going to go through and show you but something came up :P
but here's a tut to better explain things.

Hi, thanks a lot for you help.

I've followed all the step but everytime I do it and paste it onto another image, it justs pastes a white outline of what I cut out.
Do you think you know what Im doing wrong?

Is it because in the step:
"Layers>Add layer mask and choose reveal all"

In my photoshop, It's Layers>Layer Mask>Reveal All.
There is no "Add layer mask"

if you right click the mask thumbnaill(on the layer) and hit "apply mask" it'll finalize your mask....forcing the transparent layer to the image....makign it easier to apply your image else where....

also, if you click and drag the LAYER to a new photoshop document it'll transfer over with no problems...

I clicked on "Apply layer mask" but it didnt work.
When I go and drag and drop or paste it, it pastes the picture with a white outline inside of it where I used the eraser.

Also, when I do the first step (double clicking on the thumbnail) the name changes to Layer 0. Then when I drag and drop into "Create a new layer", it makes "Layer 0 copy". Mine isnt titled "Background" like yours or the one in the tutorial.
Im pretty sure this doesnt matter but I just wanted to let you know in case.

i never said "double click" the thumbnail :P and layer name is no issue...once you make your mask, just make a new layer under your masked layer....make the changes to your backround and just save your file as a jpeg....or "save for web".....to finalize it....

hmm Ive followed your instructions and still cant get it to work.
this is really pathetic...i thought i was at least better than this lol

anyways, ive posted a screenshot of every step that i do.
i followed all the instructions from:
http://www.ephotozine.com/article/Using ... -Photoshop

Step1:
Open my picture.
Image

Step 2:
Double click on the thumbnail and click on 'ok'.
(I know that you didnt say to do it but it says it in the online tutorial you gave me)
Image

Step 3:
Duplicate the layer by dragging and dropping the thumbnail onto the 'Create new layer' button in the layers tab.
Image

Step 4:
Desaturate (Ctrl+Shift+U)
Image

Step 5:
Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal All
Image

Step 6:
Use the eraser tool to remove paint and reveal the colour below.
Image

Step 7:
Select>Load Selection>OK
Image

Step 8:
Create a new image (just a tester to see if it works)
Image

Step 9:
Drag and drop (or copy and paste)
Image

Step 9b:
Same as Step 9 but before I drag and dropped, I right clicked the layer and clicked "Add layer mask"
Image

Step 9c:
Same as Step 9 but for Step 7 I did Select>Load Selection>"Clicked on 'Invert">OK
Image

I just did Step 9b and 9c to try other things but nothing works.
So far step 9c gets me the farthest.

Also, if I do all the steps without double clicking in the thumbnail first, the results are exactly the same. There's no difference

Do you notice what I did wrong?

Thanks for all the help.[/img]
