determine the size in pixels of a selection box

Postby edmurph on Tue Mar 11, 2008 11:00 am

I have wanted to know this for ages. Searched around and found lots of nothing.

When you make a selection using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, you can see the size in the info panel, but it is in centimeters or something.

How do I find out what it is in pixels?

Cheers

You can right click inside the text box and change the units to pixels or you can type in, for example, 20px

If I understand you right (and I am not sure I do, since you werent very clear) I think you are talking about the 'fixed size' Style option for the rect marquee tool. That allows you to set the size, in pixels, of a selection box.

Instead, what I want to do is select an area on the screen manually, and see the size in pixels of the selection.

Yeah my bad, I didn't read the question well enough.

Open the Info palette (Window>Info) and you'll see the W: and H: (width and height) of your current selection in pixels.

Hope this helps

hmm. ok
Do you drink to much caffiene or something dude? :)

My info panel displays centimeters, I think. Which is pretty useless. Where can I change it to pixels?

I haven't slept yet

Sorry... okay. Hopefully this is the last time you will need to hear from me on this topic :P

There is a little tiny button in the Info palette (in the upper right) that looks like a down arrow with three horizontal lines beside it.

Hit Palette Options... Mouse Coordinates change from centimeters to pixels

EDIT: if this doesn't work, what version of Photoshop are you using? In CS3 you can also click on the crosshair button beside the X: and Y: to change the units as well.
