Oscilloscope

Postby rachjm on Mon Apr 07, 2008 11:01 pm

One of the hardest things about working with graphics in the electronics industry is getting decent pictures of screens that light up... :(

I need a picture of an RPM wave on an oscilloscope, but when I take one using our (admittedly nasty) digital camera, I get this:

Image

Clearly, the human eye can't detect the 'refresh rate' of the screen, but the camera can. And the 'glowing' effect looks crazy - nothing like how it actually looks in 'real life'.

So this is my attempt:

I'm fairly happy with the result but I'd welcome feedback and friendly critique on how to make it look as photo-real as possible... In particular I'd like to improve the actual waveform, as the 'glow' looks a little fake ATM :)

Hmm, nice work... only the waveform is still disappointing... :s... It looks even worse as before...

Do you have a jpg. with the screen-layer only? (without waveform)...

Good idea to use a picture as a background.

Uhm yeah.. The original is a little different in color and waveform.
The wave is very static atm, and should be more 'edgy' perhaps.

I'm glad that you think the background is a photo - it's actually 'artificial' as well. The colour of the 'original' is a little deceptive - it looks quite green (possibly due to the camera's interpretation of the oscilloscope's backlighting) but in reality it is much closer to what I have posted here.

I was also disappointed in the waveform - here's my next shot at it (I tried to make it more 'edgy') :)

Sure - I'd be more than happy for you to have a crack at it, if you're keen. (Ps. Use 'Inflate' warp of 2.5 to match screen perspective.) :) Here's the screen layer only:

Ooh, thx... Even for holding in mind the 2.5 variable... ^^

(( Rachjm... I knew it was artificial ;) .. Therefore I wanted it to see :D ))...

I've already pasted a waveform on top ^^

It's not the one you wanted, I know... srr

Nice. :) I like your colour modifications and the effects on the wave - I can't use a wave of that shape, tho. Can you do it with a square one?

Also not sure about the shiny screen effect you've laid over the top - I reckon the line's a bit too sharp which is making it look a bit fake...

The thing is: I used an alter wave form because the square one didn't worked out :p.. ^^...

It was even worse then yours...

I'll try harder... :D

Another Attempt... (my last one :p )

What do you think about this?...

Also made one with a reflected pitcture of myself in the glass... But I geuss I then would end back up with a Photo-realistic piece... And that was just you wanna avoid ?

Heya

FINALLY got to view this page - devppl.com's being a bit funny, ay? Sometimes only works on IE, sometimes doesn't work at all. Spends ages doing goodness only knows what and then turns up a page with all the lovely header details and no message data...

*sigh* Oh well, I'm here now.

About the oscilloscope, I'm still not convinced that it looks photo real, but I think that your attempt is the best one on this page :) so I'll use it for my brochure. Could look really suck in CMYK but I guess I'll give it a try.

Thanks so much for your feedback and help! :)
