Soltek 865Pro-775

Postby webmaster on Tue Aug 17, 2004 9:04 am

Do you want to upgrade your PC to the new 925X/PCI Express/DDR2 architecture, but you think its to much money to buy a new CPU, new DDR2 memory and a PCI Express graphiccard? Here's the solutions for you. Soltek has developed a motherboard which can use a new Intel LGA 775 processor, without upgrading the other parts in your system. The Soltek 865-775 uses the new 775-pin Prescott socket, but it is driven by last generation's familiar Intel 865PE/ICH5 chipset. This means you can use your existing AGP 8X video card and DDR memory with a new Intel Prescott chip. This reduces the cost of entry to the new Socket T to the cost of the motherboard and CPU, something most users are much more willing to handle.

The question with any hybrid solution like this is how it performs? Are there performance penalties in combining the 865 with Socket 775? How does the Soltek 865Pro-775 compare in performance to a new 915 or 925X motherboard?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for new technologies, but I've been burned in the past getting something right after it comes out. I'm looking forward to PCI-X but I think I'll wait til the second version or so, give em a little bit of time to work out all the bugs. By then I'll be getting the Geforce FX 6800 512mb PCI-X card assuming they make one :)

I think its silly to upgrade to 64bit if you're not going to take advantage of PCIX Ram and Vid cards too... seems like a pretty half-a55 thing to do :)
