It's interesting although it seems like you smoothed over the face too much destroying much of the detail. To me the face holds most of the emotion and power of this particular image. Other than that the rest looks good.

In the painted one, I would totally agree with you. It's hard to show marks and such when painting over it, hints why I chose to use slightly different shades. :)
