Need Photoshop Help Quick.

Postby osidesigns on Fri Dec 19, 2008 6:39 am

I am new to designing webpages with photoshop but not new to web designing. My problem is: I have sliced up my index page and saved html and images for my web site and it is fine but when I create the about us page the about us images are overwriting the index page images. As a result I am screwing up what I'm am looking for. My question is: How do I create the other pages without overwriting what I previously created? Thanks in advance for any expertise! (Using CS3).

Step 1) Every page of your website should utilize essentially the same images when it comes to design, so there shouldn't be a problem with overwriting image names because you'd only ever need one set. It's called unity and is a good thing.
Step 2) If you are making multiple designs for each separate page of your site, stop doing what you are doing and re-read step one.

That being said.
When I am slicing up parts of a website I do the follow things:
1)Separate what I want to cut out. - If I have a solid colour background, I use css to colour the site background and hide the background in PS. etc etc.
2)After making all the necessary slices I go to File>Save For Web
2.5) I select .png and I select save user slices. This way I get handy transparent friendly .png images and only the slices I created.
3)Use Dreamweaver of Coda to build the site starting with the solid colours and working my way up to the images in the design.

If however you for some reason still have issues overwriting the slices you are making, either
a)Change the file name you are saving them under when you are in the Save For Web screen
b)Change the name of the PSD document, then the slices will default to the new name
c) move the image folder somewhere else then transfer the slices you need manually to a single images folder with your site.

Good Luck,
Any questions, just reply back.

I really appreciate the insight, but I probably didn't explain my problem in an understandable fashion.

I am not making each page look different, but I am trying to modify the content of each page to match the page in viewing. (ie. I created the index page that has the welcoming info etc... after creating that particular page or laying out the content thereof I start to change the content to fit the about us page it overwrite some of the need files that used for the index page which causes the index page to be out of whack.

Do I need to rename the slices to get it to reference the correct images for the correct page? Or what would be another solution to this issue?

Thanks for you previous reply dflynn.

Are you typing out the content in Photoshop, saving it to images and then using those for the site? Or are you talking about buttons that you have to change for each page because of a custom font?

If you are putting the content in Photoshop and saving it as an image that is not right, you instead would not use that slice in the final design and leave a gap where you can type the content in HTML.

If you are just making buttons, then rename the slices.
You shouldn't use the HTML PS gives you. It's not horrible coding but it's not the greatest either. You should be writing the HTML yourself and just using the images PS spits out.
