Wacom Tablet vs Pen Tool

Wacom Tablet vs Pen Tool

Postby ImageBear on Sat Jan 17, 2009 11:33 pm

I've used Photoshop for years, but I acquired Illustrator and Flash just recently via Creative Suite 3. I'm especially anxious to learn a little about Flash, as it's a really popular job skill. But I assume it would be sensible to learn how to work with Photoshop and Illustrator first, as people often use those programs to create images that are then imported into Flash, right?

Anyway, I've played around with Illustrator a little bit and find it surprisingly confusing compared to Photoshop. The biggest pain in the butt is the pen tool; it's so hard to get the hang of drawing with it.

Recently, an art school student told me to forget the pen tool and just buy a Wacom/Intuos electronic tablet. Is this good advice? Can a Wacom tablet really replace Illustrator's pen tool?

If so, what size tablet should I get? They're surprisingly expensive, and I hate to fork over more than $500 for an electronic tablet if I can get by with one that coasts half as much. What size tablet do you use?

Thanks.
