WDLU

Postby Johnathan on Tue Jan 20, 2009 12:36 am

Ok, I think I'm nearly ready to start putting stuff together so here's the main layout for WDLU.
It's a social networking site aimed at web designers/developers. Nothing really works yet just want some feedback on that design.
Be as harsh as you like. I can take it :)

I like how simple it is, but i think it's almost too simple... I know it's kinda vague advice sorry :( But it just needs more depth or character or something. I really like the idea though!

I must say i love the sliding content in the main div :) and @igjoe I think when there is more content it may look better, well less simple.

I'll try spicing it up a bit. That isn't for the actual home page though. Still thinking of something decent for that to attract people.

Yea, I like the sliding stuff too. Don't know how obvious it is to people that I haven't actually told though :/

Looks good, I love simplicity! However I have a few small suggestions that I think will improve it, you should try them at least :)

Firstly I think the corners should be straight rather than curved, especially with the intellectual audience you are appealing to sharp corners seems more appropriate. If this doesn't look good then just minimize the radius of the corners a bit.

Secondly, reduce the border to 1px, again it will look more professional.

Thirdly and I think probably most importantly, lose the underlines! They're annoying to look at and not really a web convention. Just have your links defined by colour.

Maybe reduce the font size by 2px? and im not sure whats going on with the dotted underlines, they look good on the 'Dashboard Friends Activity WDLU News' navigation but not on the logout and profile links.

Also, perhaps use images for the headers like 'Dashboard' to make it stand out more. Maybe make your link text colour different to your border colour too...

Maybe redo the logo too, make a bit more formal and professional.

I apologize if i've been over critical, but I think my points are relevant due to the audience you are targeting. Otherwise I love it, great concept and you appear to be doing a great job of all the php stuff which is the hard bit, love the scrolly think like flabby said!

good luck :)

That was good. Sort of thing I was looking for :P
Ok, I really don't like it with sharp corners, looks to boxy, I'll reduce the radius.
I'll make the border thinner also, I think that might work out.
I was meant to take the underlines off but got lazy then forgot. The links in the slider thing were done first so didn't think of making a new class or anything. Will take care of that.
I'll reduce the font size a bit and see how it looks
I'll try changing the colour of the headers don't really want the titles to be made up of image because they will probably be changed soon.
And I'm thinking of a new logo and navbar, looks to much like bebo I think.
