Layer Grouping and Linking

Postby PaulBennett on Sun Feb 22, 2009 11:44 am

My drawing has many layers. I would like to move by nudging, items on several layers at the same time rather than one layer at a time. This will insure the movement is identical when done simultaneously.

Layers can be linked and they can be grouped.
1) When linking, what is the effect of what actions?
2) When grouping, what is the effect of what actions?

Is the a better way to accomplish my 'group move' some better way?

thanks

You can just select each layer you want to move by cmd/ctrl clicking on each one or if they are all together click the first one then hold shift and click last one and it will select them all.

Johnathan's advice is the way to go, I'll extend it by saying that you should use groups of layers to maintain the various parts of your design together. That way, not only the nudging will be the same, but also other actions, like transparency for example.Last but not least, your design will be kept organized and clean by naming the groups with logical names.

By linking the layers you can only assure that moving and transformations are applied equaly to each linked layer.

But don't be using groups just for moving the layer around a few times. Waste of time I think and makes things messy and confusing.

I totally disagree...
If the design has two or more layers that work together for one piece, they should be in a group with a meaninful name.
This is especially true if your design is very complex.
Sometimes I have 3 or 4 levels of grupping in my designs and that's because there are dozens of layers that need to be quickly found.
I even use groupping in webdesign to separate diferent parts (header, body, footer, news ticker....) even if there is only one layer in the group.

Yea, if it's a complex design and has a lot of layers then yes. But if it's only to move them once I would find it very time consuming having to make group, rename drag in layers. And it's for web layouts I mainly use groups for and there is no point of having one layer in one group. It's totally pointless.
