How to re-size cut images

Postby Radish150 on Wed Feb 25, 2009 8:01 pm

Hey all, I'm nu here and this is the first of what will probably be many questions, I hope I don't become annoying, haha. I'm a photography school graduate who left right before the digital revolution so I'm a little behind the curve in the photoshop dept as you will soon see. So If I may, my question is this. I have an image in which I would like to enlarge a single element. I have another version of the photo in which that particular element is "better", so I have managed to cut and paste (using magnetic lasso) the alternate image, but the problem is I want to re-size the element first. I have tired to re-size the element by using "transform selection" but the re-sizing does not "stick" and it always shrinks back down to the original size when i slap it down. I think it's not actually re-sizing the object, just expanding the lasso to include more background which it is placing on my new photo. Its expanding the lasso, not the element. Any hints would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi Radish,

You can use the Transform command (not transform selection) to do that. With your cutout image on it's own transparent layer, select 'Edit>Transform>Scale'. The image will be surrounded by a bounding box with handles at the corners. While holding the Shift key down (to maintain the proper proportions), just drag one of the corner handles out until you're happy with the size. Hit the enter key to accept the transformation.

You might want to play around with 'Free Transform' while you're at it, just to learn more about transforming images. Here's a website that should be helpful...

you can also, double-click inside the selection or press the "Commit transform" button ( the "V") on the options bar
