Need some feedback on this

Postby MadAce on Mon Apr 20, 2009 11:53 am

A budy asked me to do the graphics for a browser based game of his.

But after submitting my first piece of concept art (not in-game graphs) his reaction was pretty mild to say the least.

Since he was unable to provide me with detailled feedback other than "meh" I'm forced to turn to you people for some critique.

Truth is, could be it sucks royally. After working hours and hours on something I tend to lose all objectivity. ;)

Here ya go (3mb file) and thanks in advance for the feedback.

ps: (It's technically not strictly all photoshop. Models from poser 'n max, redone in PS and armor and background drawn in PS)

It's not awful. But It's not something that I'm extremely impressed by.
The guy in the armour looks flat and robotic, and lighting affect doesn't seem to be present on the figures in the foreground.
I do like whatever it is that he's fighting though.

It would also depend on what kind of game this is and how it's being played.

Well, the game basically requires me to mass-produce all kinds of 2D images of armors, weapons and monsters. With this concept art I aimed to present the style in which the armor, weapons and monsters could be drawn and the general design style.

Since it's mass-production I was aiming to make all the armor and such in photoshop in stead of MAX to be able to work faster.

The fact that it looks robotic I can (sorta ;)) live with. The "flat" armor is somwhat more problematic as it isn't what I was aiming for. SO any advice on how to fix that would be nice. :)

Your problem is the shading when creating anything 3D shading is the key you need to pick a light source then use shading look at real life images with the same light source then use them as referance for your shading
