darken the daparts and lighten the light parts

Postby matabhaine on Fri May 01, 2009 7:27 pm

i have a satellite image, the houses i would like to make them darker on one side and lighter on the other, just wondering if there is a way to select darker colours in a short range and lighter colours, to make a bas relief type graphic, adding more depth to the houses, thanx

Photoshop's Dodge and Burn tools might work well for this. To darken the darker areas, choose 'Shadows' from the Range menu on the options bar. Then go over your image using the Burn tool. To lighten the light areas, choose 'Highlights' from the Range menu and go over your image using the Dodge tool. Adjust the 'Exposure' setting (also on the options bar) as desired. That might give you better control than any selection method.

tried doge and burn, picture too intricate, hundreds of tiny buildings, i have been burning the sides of buildings where i can see a small shadow, but it is difficult and time consuming, done all the sat and hue stuff, found unsharp mask is the best but i want some way of selecting a dark range of colours, say only the black up to very dark grey then messing with these. thanx for the replies

hi,
I don't know if my thoughts are any good on this, i am novice but who knows...

my self... been experimenting... a little.. since reading your post .. by making a couple of duplicate layers... then using the bas relief and then shifting that bas relieve image a few pixals and change the opacity a little....

when thinking further about this... i also thought this might be something along the lines of making a relief map...!! did a little searching and found this little tutorial.... on the site they also have links on shading and such which might usefull.... i hope this is helpful to you....

note: i found another site addressing the Hough Transform meathod... I maybe mistaking but part of the meathod appears to automatically select the individual structures...but it really had little info...

I hope the info is usefull...
