I'm trying to create stars using lense flare, but the ring of light that sorrounds it (the outermost one) stops VERY abuptly and looks fake. How can I make it blend more smoothly in? (I found out what to do about my previous post regarding lenseflares).
The lens flare effect is best used if you are trying to simulate the flare of light on a camera lens. In these cases the light SHOULD end abruptly as that is what occurs in reality.
When creating stars, if you want a similar, but potentially softer effect, you should look into the layer effect called "Outer Glow".

Thanks for the reply. I can't figure out what you meant tho ^^ do you mean using the outer blur on a lense flare, or on something else? And how would you use it? I tried selecting the outer part of the flare and using outer glow, but didn't get any effect no matter what settings I used.
to make a star all you need is to take your Brush tool and click once to create a small spec of white (or other bright color) light.
If you wanted this star to shine I recommend starting with an Outer Glow. This will give you a softer glow than you would get from using a Lens Flare.
I am trying to steer you away from using the Lens Flare to make a star field (unless you are singling one star out among a mass of others). If you do go this route and use a Lens Flare I urge you not to alter it too much because its appearance is made to look realistic as it is so tweaking it will probably not look as good as its default.
I hope that clarifies things.

I've made a massive starfield already, I just wanted to make a few big bright stars to add an extra touch. (Like this guy does in his tutorial: http://www.devppl.com/tutorial/6104/). Outer glow looks a bit too fake ^^
