making objects look plastic

Postby ads on Thu Jul 16, 2009 11:18 am

hi guys. first post here so would like to say hello before quizzing y'all.

i need to make this image (or similar) look like it's made of yellow plastic. have tried a few things using colour overlay and pasting the highlight and shadow channels on to a flat yellow colour but it doesn't quite work. anyone know a fairly simple way of doing it? i'm sure i've seen something before but cannot remember where...

Hi abs

For the colour, select the white area, with the magic wand tool,(this should select everything apart from the tap) then Select>Invert, now get the Paint Bucket Tool(turn down the Opacity to around 30%) then Fill with the appropriate colour.

Now for the 3D look, with the Tap still selected, Go to Layer>Layer Style>Blending Options>Bevel and Emboss>Contour, adjust the settings until you have the look you are after.

Then Select> Deselect.

For the plastic look, you want to go to Filter>Artistic>Plastic Wrap, then adjust until you get the look that you are after.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask more, if you are still having problems.

Regards, Tiff

hi tiff thanks for replying (apt name by the way for a photoshop forum ).

yeah that's giving me similar results to what i have been getting. i've attached some pics to clarify what i'm asking as i don't think i made it clear enough before! the effect is kind of plastic as in matt but i'm starting to think, the tap especially, could be 3d modeled as apposed to PS retouched...?

wow thanks for the offer tiff. very kind of you. was asking more out of curiosity as to whether it's a PS technique i could learn as i may have to do it for a job. what do you reckon though. think those images are 3d modeled or photos with a series of effects applied...?

Hi

After Inspection of the tap image.

I think that it was probably done by merging two images with photoshop. As for the plastic effect, this can also be achieved with photoshop quite easily .

On a very close inspection, the sky next to the tap has had been edited. Also the shadow does not look 100%.

Saying that, whom ever made this, has done a good job.

I hope I have helped, with my answers. Good luck with your job.
