CS3 text tool not working

I am new to Photoshop cs3 and I was trying to do text with it, and it shows it in the layers in the corner, but never shows up. it shows up sometimes if i open a graphic already done that i've found online. PLEASE someone help it's starting to get annoying.

are you putting the text under another image(layer) is your opacity set to low? just a suggestion

No, I just open new and put size 500x500 then i hit the text tool, and nothing shows up. I can see it when i click off of it, it has what i typed in the layer in the corner, but not on the sheet.

I've seen this problem many places. and it's really driving me crazy

Text will work if i put a photo before i do any text. soooo any ideas?

When you put in your size of 500x500 are you sure the units are set to pixels and not inches? I noticed, in the first image you posted, that the document size is being shown at only 1.5%. At such a small size you're not likely to see much of anything In your example showing the picture, the document size is 100%.
