How to turn a black object into white on an image?

Postby Geveze on Tue Aug 11, 2009 6:44 pm

Hi there,

on a picture. i can turn a blue object into yellow, green or any other color. and vice versa.
To do that i know 5 different ways, or combination of those methods.

1- Hue/Saturation
2- Color Balance
3- Selective Color
4- Replece Color (Similar to Hue/Saturation)

5- select the area, create a new layer, paint the selected area on new layer, blend the new layer with "linear burn".

but when it comes to black, i can't change the black to another color with any of the ways above. So i was wondering if it is possible to turn a black object into white without killing the texture. Or cleaning the object from colors, making it colorless.
best way i know so far is playing with "exposure" settings. but this time the objcet on the image is becoming blure and loosing its texture.

Here is the object i m trying to make white (or colorless). Do you know any way to do it?

i need to make that shoe as white/colorless as this one below.

thanks

you could try painting over it in white on a new layer, and then change that layer's blending mode to "difference"

from white to black is so tedious, copy your black, then paste new layer, invert it play around with eraser to find outline, tricky stuff but possible.good like here is a 1 minute job to do it right will take many good luck

Thanks for your help. Both these methods are the same actually, cdavis123's way is easier though.

i can simply select the whole shoe and do ctrl+i (short cut to invert) to invert the darks to light. But while it turns the dark colors into white it also turns white parts into black. which i don't want to. It doesnt look real.

use your eraser at half strength to get the texture, not sure if 50% in right play around with it

it is not a one or two sequence of mouse or key strokes, what your trying to do takes lots of time and to be realistic pixel accuracy

i don't mind how long it takes, i have been trying more than couple of mouse strokes, but the way you are telling me is not right. It is not the shoe without color, it is the negative of the shoe image. while "invert" turns the dark colors into white it also turns white parts into black. which i don't want to

i can select the black area and play with image>adjustment>exposure settings until it becomes white. but this also makes it look blure.
even though i m not satisfied with this, it still looks more realistic then using "invert".

is there any other way rather than inverting the picture, It is impossible to invert a shoe and expect it to look real. it doesn't matter how much u play with the opacity.

thanks anyway

Your base image is too low quality, it's nearly impossible to make something out of it without completely rebuilding the whole image.
