opening a closed path in photoshop

Postby cdavis123 on Wed Jan 07, 2009 1:58 pm

Hi all,

I have a closed path in photoshop, and I want to open it so I can add to it. Using the direct selection tool, I've tried deleting just a portion of the path, and no matter what part I have selected, it deletes all of it. If I just try to delete just a point, the path stays closed. Is there something I'm missing? Or is photoshop just that lame that it's going to make me re-draw the entire thing?

Hi cdavis123 and welcome,

To re-open a path, just click on one of the path segments with the "Direct Selection" Tool and then press the Delete key.

Hope this helps!

I've tried that probably 100 times, and it just deletes the entire path. (and I'm definately using the direct selection tool).

Don't know what else to suggest other than maybe Photoshop's preference file has somehow become corrupted. You might try resetting the preferences to see if that helps. Here's a good link explaining how to do that.... http://www.northlite.net/ps/prefs.htm

Sorry to "bump" an old topic, but this particular issue has occurred more than once at our studio. Just today it happened again, and I found this topic while searching for a solution.

The solution has perhaps turned out to be quite simple. If you cannot delete single points on a path without deleting the entire path, go to your layers palette and select a single layer. Go back to your path and attempt to edit it.

This error is consistently reproducible while multiple layers are selected. I have not been able to reproduce the error when only one layer object is selected.

First select the path (i.e. click on it). To add, right click nearby the point you want to add and choose add anchor point. you can create from there any number of anchor points (segments).
With the direct selection tool, if you click on a segment WITHOUT any anchor point selected Photoshop will delete that segment, to close one must use the pen tool anda draw the missing piece, so the best way is by adding anchor points.
