hi,
all it does is give a little bit more control and options on saving the file and you can also have setup to where yo can display up 4 samples (counting the orginal) the effects of the different settings...
now on the dpi... is for your printer but the image itself is going to be in ppi... but generally you want your dpi to appx the same as your printer dpi setting ...
but you can do everything else you want with the "save for the web " windows....
here a couple of links that explains it..

What changes does it do to the image? I have done "Save for the web optimized" to reduce the file size to less than 240KB.
I have a digital image in 24-bit color of 1200 x 1200 pixel and resolution is 600x600 dpi and 2 inch by 2 inch size. I want this image converted to 600 x 600 pixel with 150 dpi and 2 inch by 2 inch size and file have to be less than 240KB jpeg file and it has to be 24-bit color.
Can someone tell me how I can do this without distorting the original image ratio aspect?
