Split an image 9-ways in Photoshop?

Postby macabremagpie on Sat Oct 10, 2009 1:32 pm

Hey,

I've applied a grid to a large poster in CS3 that seperates it into 9 A4-sized boxes. Is it possible to split the image into these 9 pieces (9 seperate image files) automatically? I've searched online and not found anything so this is a last resort and I apologise if this is common knowledge or anything.

Obviously I know of the long, tedious ways of doing it manually (copying the boxes and pasting into new files) but the 9 images need to align perfectly when put back together and I'm working on a huge file so I don't want to risk messing it up by doing it myself.

Thanks for any advice,

Paul

hi,
just a novice myself but they way yo discribe what you want..
how about using the SLICE tool? not expeirenced with it I just know the basics however ...

you may want to experiment on another file to determine that will do
what you want before trying to use it on your main file .. it fairly quick to do...

but the slice tool, the way i do it..lol... i choose slice
draw my main box
then i do a right click and click divide, here i can adjust the number of boxes slice and/or sizes
of my slices .... t0 fixed sizes and even sizes if required...

and theni can go to the file menu click save for the web....

this will save all the slices into individual files....

this is a basic tutorials
http://simplephotoshop.com/photoshop_to ... _toolf.htm

there a ton of tutorials on the subject..

hi idad,
thank you that a basic tutorial and it good as far as it goes but it doesn't shows some of the other options you have.. ..like after you draw your main slice you can right click and click divided and there youcan plug in values for the number slices and sizes and such....

right now i really know just the baisc.. there appears there a ot of thing you can do with it.. but it will be awhile for i know those...lololol

Hey,

I didn't see your post jerryb but I ended up discovering the slice tool and yeah that worked fine. I set a grid on the page to the dimensions I wanted it splitting and then the slice tool automatically selected each "grid" space. I was unable to do it this way though because the output files were too big to save with the "save for web.." option.

So, in the end, I used the selection tool with the grid I'd set and just cropped the image and saved the seperate files 9 times.

Thanks for the replies,

hi paul,
a little surprised that the output size would be a issue... i would think that it wouldn't make a difference ..

i tried to look if there a issue with the slice tool and file size limitation but haven't found anything yet.. ...

just curious... what is your pixal deminsion of your file....? maybe do some experimentation... maybe it a memory issue...
