Photoshop Tutorial: Advanced Thresholding

Postby webmaster on Tue Jun 14, 2005 10:26 pm

In this tutorial am I going to show how to make a cool effect with the threshold function in Photoshop. First, find an image. I used googe imagesearch to find this photo of Jennifer Aniston.

Find an image that you want to use and copy it. This is the one I choosed to use:
Image

Make a new image in photoshop (CTRL+N), the image size should automatically be the same as the image you copied. Press OK (ENTER).

Select a color and paint the background with it, I choosed pink.

Now paste the photo into the image (CTRL+V). Then duplicate the layer of the photo. To do that, rightclick on the photo-layer and click on 'Duplicate Layer'. A new window will show up, just click OK or press ENTER.

Click on Image > Adjustments > Threshold and click OK or press ENTER. Your image should now look something like this:
Image

In the top-left of the layers-window you can find which blendmode you should use. Click once on it and choose 'Lighten':
Image

Your image should now look something like this:
Image

Press CTRL+E to merge the two photo-layers together. You should now only have 2 layers left. On the new merged layer, set blendmode, but this time to 'Multiply'

You're now done, here's my final result:

Actually I do that too, that's why I decided to show both of them. I don't to the tutorials for making nice images, I do it to show different techniques. :)
