hi,
I am not good and people like idad and other could probably give you better advice... but this
is my two cents worths...
on something like this if i was making it.. i would start looking at what real cartridges look like!!
that would really give yo good guideline...
now when i first looked at the image I thought i was looking at groups of three.... only concentrating
and looking closer did I see my mistatke...... it just it was to contrasting between the colors..
my thoughts...
1. the color!! .. on my my monitor the brass cartridges does not look like brass color.!! it looks more
like brown or a slightly dark copper color...!! now there many shades of brass take alook at pictures
and see which you want.. use those values
2. I would have maybe first...
a. have the whole cartridge your one cbrass color and instead of a what
appears to be a white stripe... have it more or less a lighter shade of the main rass color
and for that black stipe the same thing..... now the line are too sharp between the shades
b. and the blasck stripe the same thing , it should be basically brass but a darker shade..
and again no sharp lines.. the edge of shadwos should be faded and blend into the other color
c. now keep in mind the shadows and the lighter part won't be even distribution along the length
more tha likely the shaddows actually start tapering off so on bullet end your dark...
as far as dirty...mmm.. dirty as in dirt or dirty as in aged ! well aged... well bullet itself
may have pits .... and the cartridge... most of the color will show thru but you would have darken
areas..... i think you could mayb apply a layer with a dark cloud effect that might work....
well those are my thoughts i hope there usefull.. I think yo have a lot of work making those
realistic... smiling
here some references to look at to give some ideas..

Also, how can I go about making them look a bit dirty/worn. I've tried overlaying dirty textures and using brushes, but that's not really worked so far.
