Colours not as bright when pasted layer into new file

Postby floody on Sat Nov 14, 2009 7:52 pm

I'm fairly acquainted with Photoshop, yet I've come across a problem which is really starting to annoy me. I have a TIFF supplied by a photographer. The image is of an item of clothing that is a very very vibrant orange. I am copying that image, then I am pasting that image into a new file. Yet when i paste into the new file it the orange seems more dull. I changed the new file (before pasting into it), to be a TIFF. Both the original and the new are RGB, and both share 16 bit channel as a colour mode.

And still the picture looks more dull when I paste it into the new file... what other colour setting can i be overlooking that alters the way it looks. Also, whatever is happening, its not loosing information, as when I paste the image back into the original file, the colour is just as vibrant.

this is driving me mad and I'm running out of time. :-(

hi,
I am really out of my leaque here... but i am thinking that it might be your color managment....

under edit>color settings.... maybe your settings there needs to be changed..

for comparison purposes only.... now my set for srgb for working space and"preserve embedded profiles" for policy.....

hopefully the other guys, who are far better than me on this,, see your post..

I agree with Jerry, it's probably a color management problem. My guess would be that there's a profile mismatch between the two files. If that's so, you should have gotten a warning (see attached) when you pasted into the new file. If there is indeed a profile mismatch and you didn't get that warning, then you must either have the "Ask When Pasting" box unchecked or you have the RGB Policy set to "Off".

Hope this is helpful.

HI,

Thanks for the good ideas,

I tried looking into colour settings and some other settings but to no avail. Have (well I think I have, never done this before)... attached the before and after troublesome files.

I so want to resolve this. Cheers in advance of any good ideas.

Hi,

I've put them in a subfolder on my site. Should be able to see them and drag and download or "save as" them from Safari and FF...

http://www.jamesflood.me/photoshop/PASTE_INTO.tif
(the dull one that the layer is being pasted into)

http://www.jamesflood.me/photoshop/FIRST_FILE.tif
The image (when opened in photoshop, a much richer brighter colour)

Cheers,
James.

I am having the exact same issue. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable with Photoshop, I have been using it for 5 years, and can not get my colors bright in a 300 dpi file to save my life. I even used the apple color selector and it shows a very bright yellow but when I select it, it still comes out pale. I need to submit a logo proposal today, I have tried adjusting all the color settings too and still can not figure it out. I have googled, and used the Photoshop help tool, and nothing. Please, anyone, come forward with the solution!

Yes, I have tried every color preset, and even tried customizing it to what you just suggested. still nothing. I have a vibrant yellow in my Apple color selector, but when I choose "okay", its still pale. The Adobe color selector is worse, I cant pull a bright yellow at all.

James,

I looked at your files. I think what's happening is that the file you received from the photographer has an Adobe RGB (1998) embedded profile. And, the new file that you're pasting into has a different embedded profile (that of your workspace) that can not show that bright color using the numbers from that First file.

If that's so, you need to make a change to that new file before pasting into it. When the new file dialog opens, you'll see an "Advanced" button with an upward pointing arrow. Click on that button and you'll see a "Color Profile" pull-down menu. From that menu, choose "Adobe RGB (1998) and click the OK button.

Now, when you paste, the colors should match.

Hope this works for you :-)
