How to fill in certain sections of a drawing

Hi everyone

I've been using Illustrator for a little while and understand some of the tools.

Anyway, I've been drawing stick animals that need some areas coloured in. I have been using the pen tool to draw them, but when I go to "live fill" or use the foreground colour etc it fills all different parts of it. Example. I was trying to fill in an ear I had drawn but it only filled in half of the ear and the entire face.

I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong with the pen tool, but I don't know what.

Please help. It's really frustrating

If you could post a close up picture of the head it might help.

Im thinking the problem is lines not being 'joined' If you have a line that has even the smallest gap it will fill through it into whatever is next untill there is a solid line stopping it.

Would really need a picture to pin point the problem tho
