History Brush tool

Postby nikon2boy on Sun Mar 21, 2010 10:47 am

Hi

I have in the past used the history brush successfully to take a colour image into adjustments-desaturate. click on history brush and add colour back in to specific areas. I have just tried to do this again but clicking the image with the history brush has no effect. The image is the original it has not been modified or saved. Does anyone know why? To recap the exact sequence I am using is import image into Photoshop. Click Image, Adjustments, Desaturate. The image becomes black and white (but still RGB) Click on History Brush, then click on image.

hi,
been looking at the issue... been trying some things to see how to duplicate the problem.. it should work..

did you check y our opacity/flow/blending settings? low flow or opacity setting if too low will give that result..

Hi Jerry, thanks for the reply. My opacity/flow settings were low (around 50%) I have pushed them both to 100% but no joy. I have tried to attach a screen grab of the photoshop screen so you can see if any other settings are wrong, but it will not let me "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached." What's that all about?

I'm pretty sure I know where you are overlooking something. Open your image. Desaturate. Then in the history pallete, click on the small square box and the history brush icon is now on the layered state when you first opened your image. Grab the history brush, i had mine set on the default white - and start to paint.

Hi Tricky500,

I think you are on the right track the problem is I need idiot proof instructions!

Since I cannot show you my screen I will try to be exact. When I open the colour image of PS THe history window shows the square with the history brush symbol inside it and to the right of that is the colour image. Underneath that is a blank square with 'open' next to it. If I hover over the blank square it says 'sets the source for the history brush' If I then desaturate the image a third line appears in the history box which has the blank square with a Squareish arrow on the edge which says "drag to change the current history state, and desaturate next to it.

Ok if I click the blank square next to 'desaturate' the history brush icon disappears from the top line (next to the colour image) and appears in the box next to desaturate but clicking on the image still does nothing?

hi nikon,

not sure maybe this will helpll
i tried to duplicate what your encountering.... below is a image of what i think should take place...

the picture show your history pallette
with the orginal preview picture
and then open
then desaturate
and then historybrush is used...

by default you should immediate see
the preview , with the histry brush symbol shown, in the little box, and underneath it it should say "open"
after that , as you do them, you see your desaturate event and the history brush event...

and this is what your pallet should reflect..

note: now remember what ever box contain the history brush symbol
is just like hilight a layer!!that you going to be the sources or point of reference, if you put put the symbol on the desataurate layer
or the history layer... then your going to see little no changes.. depending

I took a look at my styles... although not sure if that has anything to do with
the issue.. but on mine default style (none) selected ..

Hi Jerry. I think I have this sussed. see attached screen grab of my PS screen

http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1cFCTInZ1JZNYLuVnZqWLMSNkJgPb

Look at your Layers window. you have the 'eye' symbol, a brush symbol next to it and an image, a COLOUR image.

In my screen there is just the eye symbol, NO brush and a Black and White image. so something is going on with the layers . Also you have a COLOUR image in your Navigator window. Mine is B/W. How do I get my layers screen to match yours?
