Virtual memory?

Virtual memory?

Postby Ash on Sun Oct 02, 2005 1:27 pm

I keep getting a message saying that I am running low on virtual memory but when I checked the properties for the C drive of my computer it seems fine.

So why does it give me the message?

It doesn't have anything to do with your harddrive space.

Right click "My Computer" and click "Properties". Go to the tab "Advanced". Click the top "Settings" button and click the "Advanced" tab in the window that just opened. Click the button in the "Virtual Memory" section of the window that opened and change the page file size settings for your C: drive.

(I'm sorry I didn't give a better explanation, I'm using a Dutch Windows version at my in-laws at this moment. I'd be able to give a better explanation when I get back home.)

ROTF!! Excellent comment Kotik!

Actually, it increases the virtual memory, giving programs the ability to suck up more drive space, instead of RAM. Saves a bit of RAM, but you'll need some free space to make your system run faster then.

Did you install new software before you got the message for the first time?

Yeah... I recognize that. You're probably asswhipping some serious imagery at that point, so it's nothing to be worried about. Just make sure you don't get the notification too often. You can't keep increasing the virtual memory settings. Regularly, the lowest setting should be twice your RAM size, and the highest should be four times your RAM size.

So if you're running with 512Mb RAM:
Initial size: 1024Mb
Maximum size: 2048Mb

Should keep your system from freezing :)

What happens if you exceed the 4x ram size limit?

I don't know. I've heard someone say it will turn your entire operating system upside down, whatever that means.
At least I'm not going to try it...
