Print from Photoshop but comes out really small on paper

Postby kangling on Tue Feb 10, 2009 5:02 am

Hi guys,

I have this problem with printing from Photoshop CS4.

I have this image which fills an entire A3 and I want to print it out onto A3.

However, when I print from Photoshop, it comes out really small on A3 paper. The size of the printed image is about 7cmx5cm. When I print an A4 sized image out onto A4 paper, the same thing happens.

I have to convert to JPEG each time I want to print a copy to get the right size and it's time-consuming for me as I need to do a lot of printing after making corrections to my images.

Anyone knows how to solve the problem? I reinstalled Photoshop and the same problem persists.

Hi kangling and welcome!

Well, I'd like to help but actually I'm a bit confused regarding the question :( To start with, I don't understand what you mean when you say "I have this image which fills an entire A3". Since the image prints very small, when do you see it filling an entire A3? Are you referring to a larger image (A3 size) that you scan and then open in Photoshop? Also, you said "I have to convert to JPEG each time I want to print a copy to get the right size". This too is confusing since saving an image as JPEG in Photoshop would not normally effect it's print size. If you could describe the problem in a little more detail I think that would really be helpful.

hi,

okay maybe i was abit unclear. you see, i first start a blank new a3 sized template in photoshop and i do my design which is a menu. so afterwards i will like to print my work out on a piece of a3 paper but when i do that, it comes out 5cmx7cm.

thus, i have to save my psd file as a jpeg file to get it to print in the correct size that i want it to be, which is a3.

in short, i have a large image in photoshop but when when i print it, it comes out very small on paper.

Hi,
I don't know what to say...been experiemtning with my hp and cs1 and I can't duplicate what your getting...

now with my hp,, if i go to printing>properteries>layout there i have a check box via that route that will automatically fit the image to the page... see if your printer has something like that...

also in that print preview . there a checkbox there for fit to media or something similar .. try working with that...

ar you sure your printer can handle a3 and a4... sounds like a silly question i know.. but... i'd be grasping for straws smiling...

hi,

i tried all of the stuff u mentioned above. the check box and all have been ticked. and i noted the image size of the preview panel and it is correct. everything looks correct, but when it comes out, it just comes out really small.

it puzzles me like hell too because my colleague can totally print from her computer (she is using CS3).

Pretty sure I know what is going on. There is a very big difference between PPI(pixles per inch) and DPI(dots per inch). Your monitor displays in PPI and your printer prints in DPI. When you right click with the magnifying glass and select "print size" does the image get really small? I'm guessing that's the case. If it is, try going to image, image size, uncheck "resample image" and enter something like 300 pixles/inch in the resolution field. This should give you the result you're looking for. Maybe read up on ppi vs. dpi and how your image resolution affects your print. You can also set a default resolution in the settings. Hope this helps.

I have been having the "small & shoved in the corner" printing problem from PS CS4 for some time now.
The solution is suprisingly simple.
Go into control panels and change the name of your FAX to something that is less similar to the printers name ("FAX 1" should do).
It solved the problem instantly!
Apparently PS CS4 confuses faxes and printers with too similar names.
