Here's a neat trick that makes it a lot easier for me when I'm converting colors:
In your RGB image, go to Select> Color Range. All the way at the bottom of the drop-down menu is a choice called "out-of-gamut". This selects all the pixels that don't conform to your CYMK prefrences. Next, hide the selection (Cmd/Ctrl-H). Now go to View> Gamut Warning.
Now, you've not only selected all the pixels that are out of gamut, but they've turned grey as well. Very easy to see. Now go ahead and use your favorite editing method. As the colors come into CYMK's color range, the pixels will change from grey to color.
When you have only a few sporadic grey pixels left, go to Image>Mode> CYMK and force them into gamut.
This probably wasn't the answer you were looking for, but once you get used to it, it's an awesome way to control your CYMK color conversions. Hope it helps you.
