this effect... but i see only a couple of ways...

it looks like
they used several layers, and maybe some layer masking and maybe using
selction tmasking....

but one basic way i did it...
1.
starting with my orginal layer i selected the face.... and put on a
seperate layer
2. now above that i put a fill layer for the color
background iwanted...
3. then i went back and duplicated the face
layer and put that above the fill layer.....
4. with that duplicate
face layer then i applied a threashold to it, adjusting for the amount of
details i wanted
5. now at this point a put in a new black layer above
the threashold face layer..
and now i painted with the brush for the
color i want... for each color area you may want to put additional layer or
just stay with that single layer with all the painting.....
but any

did a channel adjustment on each channel to insure everyting had a nice

bit...
and i guess that the only one really needed it... but i
generally do all three channels just by habit.... ...

now once
i know all the channel are basically adjusted correctly... then i did a
global curve adjustment.... where... on the lowe end of the curve i adjust
downward for dark and on the upper end of the curve i adjusted downward
making all the light areas much darker, you can make it black if you want
to go that far... ...

now on the other meathod.... as far as a
halo... i didn't have any problems... using brigthness or curves or levels
.... i think maybe it the way i setup my fuzzy slider and also i used the
