How do you turn off a core?

Alright I have a Q6600 intel quad core at 2.4 Ghz. I want to play counter
strike: source, hl2 death match, TF2, and DOD, but Steam is not a
multi-core system...yet. So i was wondering how can i turn off 2 cores so i
can play Steam games. When ever i play counter strike:source it lets me
play for a good 10-15 mins.then it frezzes and quits the games. One of my
friends told me that i can download a program that can disable my cores for
stweam games games, but i can't seem to find it. Anyone have any idea on
what to do?

After getting my last few bits I was waiting for (Couple of fans and fan
controllers) I am well impressed.

Same system settings as before the CPU has gone from 53c to 48c and
MOBO temp from 35c to 29c. (Full Load temps)

I am well happy even with all the fans turned down to 750RPM instead
of 1600RPM (OMG how quite) temps only get as high as 51c full load

Latest OC as you can see from the temps I coulc still go higher but I
dont dare. I wont be running it at 4.7Ghz anyways as I want to be able to
turn my fan speeds right down, so I will be running 4.6Ghz still.

Even at that temp your gonna slowly cook it over time generally CPUs take
time to get cooked anyways unless you go wild with your settings and just
blow it straight off.

As advised before 60-65c is top safe temp and thats whilst running a
stress test such as Prime 95 which will run your system at full load for as
long as needed to make sure your system is stable you should run this for
about an hour at least. Also if you have a dual core CPU you will need to
run two instances of Prime 95 to have each core at full load.

New AMD procs should not be run this hot though !

My Intel 950 is running at 59-60c whilst running two instances of
Prime 95 for an hour.

Graphics cards though can run much hotter mine is getting upto 90c
under full load but I would not advise going much higher.
Statistics : Posted by johneva • on Mon Sep 27, 2004 4:50 pm • Replies 7 • Views 3200

Really, it works incredible. When you install it you will see about
an 80mm fan on a huge block of copper. It cools so good because the fins

Besides that, you get a fan controller to go with it, so you can make it

Well, first thing I would recommend is making sure you have adequate
cooling before attempting to do any overclock. Depending on how much you
want to overclock aftermarket fan solutions from antec or thermaltake would
work fine. If you're planning on going on the extreme side of things
watercooling might be best. After you're sure you've got the cooling and
ventalation required you can find an excellent guide at
If you want to do a little more research before oc'ing you can find a
great FAQ on video card overclocking at
