Normal hard drives are still better. If you want speed so much buy two
drives and connect them in RAID-0 mode (stripped). Only drawback - if one
of them die you lose all your data, or buy at least three (up to 32) and
connect them in RAID-5 mode. In that way you have greater speed (especially
read, writing may use a lot of CPU, so it is usually a little slower), and
even if one disc breaks down you still have your data.

SSD discs will be good in a few years (if they don't invent something
even better), but now they are too expensive for use in desktop computers.
There's also the problem with the number of writes that flash memory can
stand before dying. For most flash memories its 300 000 times which is more
than enough for mp3 players, removable discs, etc, but computer almost
always writes something to hard drive.
Statistics : Posted by nighthawk • on Fri Jul 25, 2008 2:40 pm • Replies 2 • Views 525

Well thats the thing though int it,
you need to have other things working at that speed to be able to use
it, also you would need the demand for it. Just cos it can go that quick
dont mean it will be going that quick.
Though it will still make a difference with that kinda seek time and
transfer rate.
Load times for everything will improve also boot times.
At the moment WD Raptors are the only HD's using 10,000 RPM that I
know off and seek times are pretty much half the time of everything else.

There is an 74 Gig WD Raptor thats been out for a while now but it
does not have some of the new features that are used in this new 150Gb one.

support the UNIX permission system.

To add to the list of filesystems:
ext2 - OLD and very curruptable, use only for read-only purposes

ext3 - like ext2 but this is a journaling filesystem. If you power
off your system mid-copy you should be able o retreave all your files after
a rebuilding scan

reiserfs - this is the reiser filesystem version 3. amazing
journaling (see above) filesystem with crazy speed. Also allows you to get

reiser4 - same as above with alot of speed improvements _AND_ the

xfs - haven't really used it personally. I hear its very fast, has
meta-data journaling...

jfs - IBM's journaling filesystem. It's kinda new and I haven't
touched it.
