Scripting - who is actually using this function?

Postby noseyparker on Tue Mar 20, 2007 6:35 pm

I'm a student at Uni just now and I have to write up a short (ish) essay on scripting in Photoshop and wondered who exactly was making use of scripting in Photoshop. Is it a workplace thing or are people using scripting at home? Should Universities and colleges be teaching more photoshop scripting? I would like to look into making scripting easier for non-programmers (I don't even know if this is possible) but it would be a pointless excercise if very few people actually use it!
Please let me know your thoughts!

I'm a non-professional who has found several useful scripts on the web, though have not written any of my own. I think this would be most useful!

Hi
Scripts are used when steps can't be incorporated in Actions, perhaps involving filenames or such, and can also have conditional steps, such as only rotate if upright. These days most scripts are written in Javascript, which means they will work in both a PC and a Mac without any changes.
There is a forum at
http://www.ps-scripts.com/bb/ and a tutorial at
http://www.photoshopsupport.com/tutoria ... ripts.html

I have written several, the one I use most is AddFileName, which adds the filename without the extension to the photo with optional text before and after. You can try it out - download by right-clicking on
http://www.secalis.co.uk/Files/AddFileNamejust.js . To use scripts see the tutorial. The best way to edit the script isin a html editor - I use PSPad from
http://www.pspad.com/en/

So, are you saying it just let's you name the file without the extension added, but it will still be read correctly by different programs?

No - it types the filename onto the photo - see below

The text before and after the filename is optional. There are other ways of doing this now, but the script is still very useful for large numbers of files.
