Slices?

Hi there, I'm in the process of building my first website, and am using Photoshop to create the site layout. My design consists of a custom shaped frame in the centre of the screen with links alongside it. When the user clicks on a link, they are sent to the corresponding page, which is then dispalyed inside the frame.

I have been told that in order to make this design I would need to use slices. I have never used slices before, and am at a bit of a loss.

What do I need to do so that when you click on a link the webpage appears inside the centre frame?
I've experimented with hyperlinks, but for some strange reason, they shift all the slices around them out of place. Can anyone help?
