Street light replacement problem

Postby gjuro on Wed Jun 06, 2007 2:56 pm

My problem is following:
I need to simulate the situation with new street lamps which have a much better color rendering than the existing ones (sodium lamps)

I have taken two pictures from the same spot, one during the day and another one in the evening when the sodium lamps are on.
The sodium lamps have a bad color rendering, when i try to lower the yellow i cant get the right picture.
I thought if i could somehow use the daytime picture for the colors and the night photo for the pattern of the illumination of the steet.
Can you help me ?

Posting the images is usually the best way to get help since we'll have much more information that way.
You can upload them with www.imageshack.us
It sounds pretty complicated what your trying to do. For how long have you been using photoshop?

Well I'm a beginner in Photoshop, only basic things I know how to do.
These are the pictures I took:

http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/961/oneaw8.jpg

http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/1043/twovn9.jpg

I have them much bigger, these are compressed just for the use on the web.

The final picture should be something like this "yellow" one, but with white instead of yellow, much more colors on the fasades, the trees shoud be green etc.
When i photographed I knew that road lights don't render much of the spectrum so I thought maybe I can do something with daytime picture,
using the night picture only for the information facing the position of the lights (masts), the photometrics etc.
This is my first serious task in my new company.
Thanks again!

And a serious task it is indeed...
I... I don't.. know.
THis is not a very good tutorial but it might give someone some ideas:
http://www.photoshoptalent.com/photoshop-tutorials/day-to-night.php
http://www.photoshopnerds.com/converting-day-scene-into-night.htm
It's kinda the same on all of the tutorials and their all ****..
Erm.. One of the biggest problems is gonna be creating the correct lighting..

I will try a few things and tell you what works and what doesn't. Will edit when done...

well that was fast. Ok so I had a feeling my first attempt would work, and it did. Here is the final effect:
Image

All I did was I placed each image (the daytime and night time images) in their own layers with the night time one on the bottom and the day time one on top. I then lined them up by the building and sign (since they are slightly off, but not much). Then I just set the blend mode of the daytime one to COLOR. What that blend mode does is it takes the color from the top one (only the hue and saturation) and transfers it to the one below. The end result is the lighting effect of the night time image with the color from the day time.

I did no other editing so you can imagine what a little color shifting would give you, if you think it's necessary.
