Sony has now released a totally new sort of a product. It is called DVDirect. It is a device that you can either connect to your computer or your television set, and you can both burn and record stuff in it as it is a DVD-R. The goodie about it is that it also burns/reads "dual layer" DVD Disks. (Dual Layer DVDs can store more than 8 GB of data on it.)

Sony are expecting it to become a big revolution as it is a device for everyone.

For info about the device visit http://www.guru3d.com/newsitem.php?id=1969

I like the design if this product, but I don't think it will be very popular. Dual layer discs are much more expensive compared to standard dvd-r discs, and when the dual layer discs have a lower price, 4 and 8 layer discs will be available, and the dual layer discs will not be used. Thats what I think.

It looks pretty cool, but basically it is just a dvd writer in a slick casing... I doubt this will be very interesting on the open market, since there already are plenty of dvd writers available. And those can even be mounted inside of your computer, so you don't have another box standing next to it. And by the way, when you have quite a new computer, there should be tv-out on it, so this Sony box is actually pretty redundant...

Well, it is basically for people who dont have gfx cards with TV-out cause not everyone has a new computer.

You dont necesarrily have to use dual layer disks. It is just an option you have. You can burn simple DVD disks as well.

You can even connect your image capturing device to it directly and record stuff.
