transparent gradient after saveforweb

Postby djp_phillips on Fri Jun 06, 2008 10:02 pm

Is it possible to retain a transparent background to the shadow / emboss effects after save for web in photoshop, even before that actually, here is my problem:

http://lagigude.com/test.html

I think my problem is obvious, there is a drop shadow effect on the sides of my background images what are place onto of a body background image, and so... not pretty, I would need help in finding how I could make it so the background image edges stay transparent, is it possible?

Thanks

PS: even by saving as a gif with a transparent background, the drop shadow effect makes a shadow drawn onto a white background so although there is no more square white look, there is still a problem

Hi djp_phillips,

Try "Save For Web" as a PNG-24. It should look somewhat better, but be prepared to compromise on file size because you'll never get it as small as a GIF.

Oh and FYI your link doesn't work.

But I now have another problem: IE 6

What can I say? Microsoft... :P

Thanks to Microsoft it's a no-win situation. GIF can do what you want, but not well. PNG can do exactly what you want, but Microsoft can't handle it...

Looked at your link though, and I can't really see what the problem is... :? Your background is a solid colour - why do you need transparency?

For my wood buttons i could ditch the transparency, but not for the border on the left side which is a drop shadow over what is a gradient white -> very light blue as a background-image for the body

If I understood the problem correctly there is one solution, but it is also a bit of a loose situation due to Microsoft...

hi my thoughts....
1. not all browsers will will accept a transparent png.... i believe IE7 will, the apple browser i believe.... opera i don't thinkso but mozilla will....
2. so that leaves only gif!! that universal .... however normally you can not create "fade" , it either transparent or it not!!!! nothing in between..and for discussion purposes let call fading or translucient... since that does discribe what i think your wanting.... .....
3. now there is a little trick i found and been playing with to create that fading/translucient effect... it not perfect.... but to some degree it works...
here alittle tutorial on it....

I hope that helps...

That's actually a pretty good workaround, jerry, thanks. Hopefully it won't be too long before all browsers accept PNG - we're heading that way slowly but surely! :)

hi,
your welcome.... and I agree with you some these browser outfits are awful slow making the browser fully web compatabile....

also i wish they would make mng a standard.... it a possible competitor to your animated gifs!! first of all , mng your dealing with 24 bit animation where as gif your 256 color animation.!! smiling... but anyway that probably dreaming.. smiling

Hi again, Opera is okay with PNG actually, and I worked around my problem by css conditions saying if it was IE 6 or earlier, I made the background white and made the other backgrounds just normal ifs of jpg's and if not then I use the png's

so my page doesn't look the same in IE, but it's only the background of the body that's different so it's not too big a deal
