unable to set contrast more than -50?

Postby noob on Sat Jan 17, 2009 5:45 am

Hey all, I've got another basic question here. I'm trying to follow this tutorial - http://www.gomediazine.com/tutorials/gi ... e-new-sex/ - but I can't set my contrast to -100. I'm limited to -50. Also the brightness can down to -150, whereas in the tutorial, -100 is the max.

Not sure what's going on.
Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,
The contrast control shown in that tutorial is from an older version of Photoshop. The newer versions have a choice of using "Legacy". If you check the "Use Legacy" box, your contrast control will go from -100 to +100 otherwise from -50 to +100. Using the Legacy option applies contrast the old way and can cause clipping or loss of image detail. However, it can be useful for editing masks or scientific imagery. Click the link below to read about it.

Hope this is helpful.

P.S. I really think the Legacy option is there mostly for backward compatibility reasons. That is, for editing the brightness or contrast of images created with older versions of Photoshop.

Hey there,

Thanks so much for taking the time comment. I appreciate it. I'll give the legacy a try. It's interesting that you mention that it can cause loss of detail. That's what I'm going for, and found I couldn't the effect.

Thanks again.
Cheers,
Rob
