Understanding Bridge!

Hi there,

I am trying to understand Bridge.

Using CS3, Bridge tells me that a particular 16 bit file is 4962 x 3508 px; 42 x 29.7 cms (A3) and 127.24 mb in size.

But when I open that file in CS3, PhotoShop tells me the file is 99.6mb.

And when I reduce that same file from 16bit to 8 bit, Bridge tells me that file is now 33.95mb, but when opened in PS, it is 49.8mb.

Would be really grateful if someone can give me an explanation.

The file size in Bridge is the actual physical size that the file takes up on your hard drive. I find only small variances in the size reported by Bridge, and the size reported by my OS. Basically, the differences can be attributed to rounding.

In Photoshop, it depends on where you're read the file size. If you are getting the "document size" from the bottom of the document window, you are actually viewing two numbers, separated by a "/". The number on the left is the "print size" of the image, which equates roughly to the size of a saved, flattened file in Adobe Photoshop (.psd) format. The number on the right is the size of the file including layers and alpha channels, again saved in .psd format. While these figures have their uses, they usually bear little resemblance to the actual current file size.
