Linux is usually much safer that windows. That's not true for ubuntu.

Here is a short text on how to hack ubuntu, please don't abuse it :wink:

When booting up select second item in menu - recovery mode
Then type passwd, type new password (twice), reboot.

Now you can log in with that new password.

That's it, system is hacked in few very simple steps.

Only thing that might protect your PC is BIOS password and every kid knows how to remove that protection.


Other distributions, such as Fedora, are safe, because you need to know root (administrator) password to do this.

Because of the people who have ubuntu installed on their pc. They should know how unsecure their OS is.

What sort of access does this new user account give you?

In my limited knowledge of Linux, I thought that only the super admin can really damage an installation...

Am I wrong?

No you are not wrong, but in this case you have root access. 'standard' (if there is any such thing in linux distro's) linux will not have this behavior(and is pretty secure). As I've heard ubuntu has this design with a 'locked' root account, and all user have potential 'superuser' access. This design is not recommended for security :), I think (quite sure) you can change ubuntu not to behave like this.
