Hi. I hope someone can help me out here.

I took my SanDisk memory card into work today which contained the original files of some photos I took recently. I copied the files onto my PC at work by dragging them into a new folder and even renamed them. I made alterations to some of the new files using Photoshop, in most cases just made them smaller for uploading.

When I got home I connected the memory card to my laptop and discovered that the original files on the memory card have been replaced by the new files, but only in size not name. I.e, they still have the original name, but are actually the new files in size.

This has really baffled me and I mostly just want to get the original files back, but I also want to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Any advice appreciated. Cheers.

Are you sure you didn't accidently create shortcuts of the files to your PC? That would explain both the no difference by renaming and the replacing of the original files.

I have never heard of anything like this happening. I don't think your computer would be clever enough to 'overwrite' your altered files over files with completely different names that are stored in a different location.

I think it is most likely that, as Etheryte suggests, when you dragged the images into a new folder you merely created shortcuts to the images instead of copying them.

If this is the case, there is (unfortunately) no way to retrieve your originals. Sad
